Gabia, a Korean domain registrar, has applied alone to ICANN for the new generic top-level domain '.HAN', based on the shared syllable in Korean cultural terms such as Hangul, Hansik, Hanbok and Hanok. ICANN reopened applications for the first time in 14 years; about 1,600 applications from 481 organizations were filed between April 30 and August 12. Final approval and registration are expected to take about 2–3 years, and Gabia plans to run it as an open domain and expand into global registry business if approved.
