Black Materials, a startup founded in August 2019 by CEO Kim Il-ho, a native of Samcheok, extracts high-purity carbon (99%+) from Gangwon-do anthracite to make battery anode materials. After about 250 trials and 5.5 years of process development, it launched KG-1 artificial graphite for lithium-ion batteries and developed KHC-1 hard carbon for sodium-ion batteries. The company is planning about 3 billion won in added equipment investment for a 300-ton-plus annual line and intends to relocate from Hwaseong to Samcheok or Donghae.
